Extreme irritability

Extreme irritability and blowing up are not normal and can be the result of a number of disorders related to brain chemistry. Such a situation is dangerous for the afflicted, family and co-workers when it is not diagnosed by a psychologist and treated with medication or cognitive behavioral therapy. This person is literally putting his life and the lives of people he loves and cares about at risk by not seeking help. Medications and anti-anxiety drugs are available by prescription and can alter the outcome of clinical depression or other anxiety related conditions, depending on the diagnoses as outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV).

Fear, worry and panic beyond what is normally experienced are symptoms of an anxiety disorder. Insomnia is one symptom of depression that can be caused by changes to brain chemistry after a traumatic death or other event that causes PTSD. PTSD, or post traumatic stress disorder, can result in permanent changes that cause anxiety and a feeling or reliving the event or events that caused the condition. Irritability is also associated with PMS, also known as post menstrual syndrome, a monthly event of women. Doctors are quick to blame patients for their emotional problems, citing their lack of self-control as the cause of their condition. But anxiety related behavioral disorders are not the fault of the patient.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a specific form of an uncontrollable anxiety condition. It also is not the fault of the patient, but it fortunately can respond to treatment with SSRIs such as Prozac, antidepressants, and other anti-anxiety drugs. Persistent thoughts and thoughts that don't go away are characteristics of OCD behavior. These people perform repeated checking and rechecking. Their uncontrollable and recurring thoughts are accompanied by impulses to check, symptoms that afflict some patients for the rest of their lives. Tricyclic antidepressants affect serotonin levels in the brain and can help the intrusive thoughts. Hoarding, washing, arranging and counting are other types of OCD with their own sets of symptoms. Avoidance of anything that induces worsening of the symptoms is advisable by the medical professional.

Scientists know that the caudate nuclei, located near the thalamus, is one area of the brain where brain chemistry is disrupted in patients that have anxiety disorders. Communications between these two parts of the brain and the otbitofrontal cortex results in the conditions. Sexual dysfunction can be relieved by drugs that treat impotence and erectile dysfunction. Neurons are connected by synapses and the misfiring due to low levels of serotonin in the brain is a serious problem for these people.
